Candle bags were mainly used in north-eastern Iran. In the central part that joins the two pockets, believers made a notch to insert the neck of a bottle. At the mosque, they lit candles in small niches and then took a little water from the basin in the central courtyard. Thus, as they visited different mosques, the bags emptied and the bottle filled up. The water collected was believed to have healing properties.
