The Shoowa, a subgroup of the Kuba kingdom, live in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are known for their embroidered raffia fabrics, easily recognisable by their geometric patterns and short, coarse pile.
These refined textiles were once used for royal clothing, as currency or as prestigious coverings. They had cultural significance.
Traditionally, men cultivate raffia palms and are responsible for weaving. The women do the embroidery and appliqué work on the textile cloths.
